For a long time, the missing persons posts on this site (and page) followed a fairly straightforward format. I gathered the available information, organized the important details into bullet points, and tried to make the facts as easy as possible to read and share. While there was nothing inherently wrong with that approach. Names, dates, physical descriptions, locations, circumstances, and identifying information are incredibly important in missing persons cases. Sometimes one seemingly insignificant detail is exactly what causes someone to recognize a face, remember an encounter, or make a connection.
But over time, I began to feel as though something was missing. The facts told readers what happened, but they didn’t always tell the story of the person at the centre of the case. A missing person is so much more than a photograph beside a list of statistics. They are not simply a height, weight, hair color, last-known location, and date they disappeared. Behind every missing persons report is an actual human being who had relationships, routines, hopes, struggles, interests, families, friends, and a life that existed long before their name appeared on a missing persons poster. That realization has inspired a change in the way I want to present these cases.
Going forward, my posts will focus more heavily on telling their story. The essential facts of their case will still be there. Accuracy remains extremely important to me, and I will continue researching available sources to build as complete a picture as possible. The difference will be in how that information is presented. Instead of simply listing a timeline of events, I want to take readers through that timeline.
Instead of telling you only that someone disappeared on a particular date, I want to explore what is known about the days leading up to their disappearance, where they were last seen, what happened afterward, how the search unfolded, and what questions remain unanswered. Whenever reliable information is available, I also want to tell you something about who that person was, because that matters.
Missing persons cases can easily become mysteries. We naturally want answers. We look at timelines, examine inconsistencies, wonder about unexplained circumstances, and ask the inevitable question: What happened? But when we become focused entirely on solving the mystery, there is a danger that the person themselves becomes lost inside their own case. I don’t want that to happen here. My goal is to tell these stories in a way that keeps the missing person at the centre.
When information is available, I want readers to learn about their personality, their family, their interests, their circumstances, and the life they were living before they disappeared. Not every case has that level of information available, particularly the historical cases, but when those details exist, I believe they deserve to be included. These aren’t characters in mysteries. They are people.
Research Will Remain Important
Changing the format does not mean abandoning the factual side of these posts. It is quite the opposite. I plan to continue looking beyond basic missing persons profiles whenever possible, including police releases, government databases, contemporary newspaper reports, archived coverage, interviews, and other credible sources.
There may also be occasions when I discuss theories or questions raised by people following a case. When I do, I will make every effort to clearly distinguish verified information from speculation. That distinction is incredibly important. A theory circulating online is not evidence, a rumor is not a fact and an unanswered question does not automatically point toward a particular conclusion. The purpose of including those discussions isn’t to accuse people or turn someone’s disappearance into entertainment. It is to provide context about the questions surrounding a case while remaining respectful of everyone involved.
Why Make the Change?
Essentially, I want these posts to be something people actually stop and read. A bullet-point post might tell you that someone disappeared twenty years ago. A story can make you stop and realize that somewhere, a family has lived through twenty years of birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and ordinary mornings without knowing what happened to someone they love. That difference matters to me.
If telling these cases as stories encourages one more person to read until the end, remember a name, share a post, recognize a photograph, or simply understand that a forgotten missing persons case still represents a real human being, then the change is worthwhile. Some of the cases featured here may be well known while others may have received only a handful of newspaper articles before quietly disappearing from public attention. Those are often the stories I especially want to find, because a case being old doesn’t mean it no longer matters.
A case receiving little media coverage doesn’t mean the missing person matters less. And the passage of time doesn’t erase the people still waiting for answers. So, consider this the beginning of a new chapter for this site. There will still be photographs, dates, descriptions, timelines, sources, and important investigative information. But surrounding those facts will be something more. Their story. Their story about the person who disappeared, the circumstances surrounding their disappearance, the search for answers, and the questions that remain.
I hope this new format encourages people to spend a little longer with each case rather than simply scrolling past another missing persons poster. Most importantly, I hope it helps return something that can easily become lost after years – or decades – of unanswered questions: the person behind the case.
Every missing person has a story, and their story deserves to be told.
