In the early morning hours of October 16, 2015, 27-year-old John Hastings walked away from his sisters residence in downtown Winnipeg. No one knew it would be the last time he would ever be seen. There are few details surrounding John’s disappearance. Investigators have never publicly identified the residence he left, where he intended to go, or who, if anyone, he planned to meet. What is known is that sometime after leaving that downtown home, John vanished without a trace.
Nearly a decade later, those unanswered questions remain. John was born on October 25, 1987. He stood 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed approximately 141 pounds, and had black hair, brown eyes, and a thin goatee and moustache. When he disappeared, he was wearing a black sweatshirt with grey markings on the sleeves and black jeans.
Those simple details—a description of his appearance and the clothes he wore that morning—have become some of the few concrete pieces of information investigators have to work with.
As family and friends realized John had not returned home and could not be reached, concern quickly grew. The Winnipeg Police Service opened a missing person investigation, hoping someone had seen him after he left the downtown residence. But the search produced few answers.
Police interviewed potential witnesses and followed up on available leads, yet no publicly released information has revealed where John went after leaving that residence. There have been no confirmed sightings, no known communications, and no publicly identified evidence explaining what happened during the hours after he disappeared.
One year later, on October 20, 2016, the Winnipeg Police Service marked the anniversary of John’s disappearance with another public appeal. Investigators reminded the public that John had not been seen since that October morning and urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to contact the Missing Persons Unit.
The renewed appeal underscored a painful reality. The investigation had reached its first anniversary without the breakthrough that John’s family had been hoping for.
Unlike many missing persons cases, very little information has ever been released publicly about John’s personal life or the circumstances leading up to his disappearance. Police have not disclosed whether foul play is suspected, whether John was considered vulnerable before he vanished, or whether investigators have developed any significant leads. That silence has left many of the most important questions unanswered.
Where was John headed that morning? Did he meet someone after leaving the residence? Did anyone see him after he walked away?
Those answers remain unknown. As of today, John Hastings continues to be listed as a missing person by both the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains. His case remains open, and investigators continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward.
For John’s family and friends, the passage of time has not diminished the hope that one day the truth will emerge. Somewhere, someone may remember seeing a young man in a black sweatshirt walking through downtown Winnipeg on that October morning in 2015.
That memory, no matter how small it may seem, could be the key to finally understanding what happened to John Hastings and bringing long-awaited answers to those who continue to search for him.
