Details: Benjamin is a houseless man well-known in Iqaluit, Nunavut, has been missing since March 2014. He was first reported missing on March 21, 2014. Benjamin was a fixture in downtown Iqaluit, frequently seen at the Northmart, Baffin Gas, or the Royal Bank building.
For weeks following his disappearance, the Iqaluit RCMP, Nunavut Search and Rescue, and hundreds of local volunteers scoured the city, checking abandoned boats, crates, furnace rooms, and crawl spaces.
At age 17, he survived a near-fatal snowmobile accident where he was found “nearly frozen to death,” which left him with distinctive marks on his chin and led to the loss of his toes from severe frostbite.
In April 2016, two years after he vanished, Benjamin’s family and friends held a memorial service at St. Jude’s Anglican Cathedral in Iqaluit. His disappearance sparked significant community dialogue regarding the lack of resources for homelessness and mental health in the North.
