Details: Annie was only 13 years old when she disappeared from Churchill, Manitoba, on June 22, 1974. She had just returned from a residential school (MacKay) in Dauphin, Manitoba. She was last seen on June 18, 1974 by a cab driver giving her and a publicly unidentified male companion a lift. The man was described as at least 10 years older than Annie and was asking for a ride to a gravel pit, a popular place for camping and bonfires, about three kilometers (approx. 2 miles) past her reserve called Dene Village. The cab driver reported Annie was extremely intoxicated and the man forcibly removed her from the car. The man requested that the cab pick them up later and when the cab returned the man was alone.
Annie’s family was not initially concerned when she didn’t return home that night as she had told them she was going to be at her friend Eva’s house. When Eva visited the reserve 4 days later and reported not hearing from Annie, her family reported her missing. RCMP searched Dene village by foot, land, and air, and turned up no trace of Annie. Her friend Eva believes that the man she rode in the cab with that night was her murderer. When she asked him privately about Annie’ disappearance he claimed no knowledge of what happened and said he was “blackout drunk.” He has since passed away.
In 2016, the Winnipeg RCMP contacted the family to reopen the file and requested DNA samples to help identify any remains that might be found in the future.
