Case reference: Homicide #4/2002
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Year of birth: 1983
Lin’s Date of death: February 11, 2002
Lin was a 19-year old York University student from China. She was found outside her apartment building at 1 Fourwinds Drive, near Keele Street and Finch Avenue West in Toronto on Sunday February 10, 2002, at approximately 8:06 pm. Lin was found suffering from severe stab wounds, primarily to her neck. She was rushed to a hospital but died shortly after arrival.
Law enforcement believes that Lin likely knew her attacker, though the exact nature of their relationship is unknown. The suspect is a male, likely South Asian or Asian descent, with a pale complexion. He was described as being between 5’6″ and 5’7″ tall, weighing approximately 130 lbs with a slender build. A 163-metre blood trail led away from the scene. Forensic testing confirmed the presence of offender DNA, as the killer was likely injured during the struggle. Also, a distinctive hat with three Pokemon characters (including Pikachu) was found at the scene. DNA on the toque matched the blood found at the scene.
In recent years, the Toronto Police Service has renewed appeals for information, even featuring the case on the 24 Shades of Blue podcast in November 2023. Law enforcement have expressed hope that genetic genealogy – which is the same technology used to solve other cold cases — may eventually identify the killer.
