Ashton, a 25-year-old former university football star, was shot and killed on June 26, 2017, around 1:00 am outside the Mingle Room Bar and Grill at 470 Rideau Street, Ottawa, ON. Law enforcement believes that the incident began as a “minor argument” in the bathroom line inside the club, which then spilled out onto the street where the shooting occurred in front of approximately a dozen witnesses. Ashton was a celebrated athlete who played for St. Francis Xavier University and was a new father at the time of his death.
The OPS continues to offer a reward of up to $75,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. This is currently the highest reward offered for an unsolved homicide by the service.
In 2020, Law enforcement has released surveillance footage and images over the years, seeking to identify at least seven men and three women believed to be key witnesses. Some are thought to reside in the Toronto area or the United States.
