Valerie was last seen alive: September 25, 1970
13-year-old Valerie Drew was last seen on the afternoon of Friday, September 25th, 1970. She was in the company of two males and walking through Marker’s Acres (now the area of Compton Street) toward Highway 401. Her body was found two days later, on September 27, 1970, in a wooded area north of Weller Avenue by a volunteer search party. An autopsy revealed she died from multiple skull fractures caused by being struck with a heavy stone. Investigators found a 10-by-15-inch rock nearby that fit perfectly into a depression in the ground. While her underwear was found around her neck, police have confirmed there was no evidence of sexual assault.
Retired detectives have stated they believe Valerie likely knew her killer and had one main suspect in mind, but lacked sufficient evidence for a conviction. Kingston Police continue to hold forensic evidence from the scene and the autopsy for ongoing testing as DNA technology advances.
Valerie’s death is the city’s oldest unsolved homicide and has been actively investigated for 54 years. She is also the youngest victim of all Kingston’s cold cases.
