Details about Waylon’s case: Waylon was last seen in the Lake St. Martin area of Manitoba. He had lived in Winnipeg and gone to Lake St. Martin to visit family. He went for a walk and never returned. Waylon had been diagnosed with manic depression between Christmas and New Years of 2005. Waylon’s mother said that he had been struggling with his diagnoses and was not his usual self.

This year (2024) is Waylon’s 36th Birthday. Waylon’s mother Debra says he was a happy child and is a very talented artist. At the time of Waylon’s disappearance he had been living with his grandmother in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He had a chance run-in with his mother on January 7, 2006. She asked where he was headed and he responded with “I’ll be right back, Mom. I’m going for a walk.” She said, “Okay, I’ll wait for you.” He did not come for a visit that night which she assumed was because it was too cold out.

She didn’t know it at the time, but these would be the last words she would exchange with her son.

It wasn’t until a few days later that she found out he had hitchhiked all the way to Lake St. Martin and was staying with his grandfather. Debra had asked family members to bring Waylon home. By this point, Waylon had been diagnosed with depression and his behavior had changed in recent months. Sometimes he would say strange things and had become paranoid and had lost his appetite. One winter morning, police found the teen wandering around St. Vital on a frigid winter night, looking for a place to warm up. He wasn’t wearing socks. When police brought him home, his usually sleek ponytail was undone and messy. So when Debra learned he had gone to stay with his grandfather at Lake St. Martin, she was very concerned. She still doesn’t know why went up there as they hadn’t gone as a family since the boys were young. There were people there she didn’t trust.

After a few days, Debra went to get him herself. When she arrived, she was told by a family member that ‘Waylon hadn’t been around for a few days’. Unfortunately several people believe that they were the last to see him, which makes things confusing when trying to create a timeline of his last movements.

From all accounts, Debra believes that Waylon was last seen on January 17, 2006. She has heard so many rumors about what happened to her son but nothing seems to have come out of any of them. Debra just wants someone to help her find her son. Even if he is no long alive, she still wants to find him so she can give him a proper burial.

To date, Waylon Edwin Smith has not been located.
