Bernie was a member of the Yellow Quill First Nation and the eldest of her siblings. Her family and friends described her as a smart, outgoing, and happy person with a big heart who was quick to smile. She was also a mother to five children.
Bernie was last seen on 20th Street West in Saskatoon on January 1, 2012 at approximately 10:00pm. There were also unconfirmed reports of her in the area of 20th Street around 4:00 a.m. the day her body was found. Her body was discovered on the morning of January 2, 2012, in a ditch near a service road off Highway 16, approximately two kilometers east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan by a woman walking her dog. Her body was located just off the travelled portion of the road.
The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit leads the investigation. Although foul play was immediately suspected, authorities have not publicly released her exact cause of death.
Bernie was laid to rest on Yellow Quill First Nation.
Saskatoon RCMP are asking anyone who may have traveled along Highway 16 or in the area between 4:00am and 9:30am on January 2, 2012 to contact them with any information about vehicles, people or any behavior out of the ordinary.
