The Unsolved Murder of Audrey Gleave

Audrey Gleave, a 73-year-old retired science teacher, occurred in December 2010 in Lynden, Ontario. She was a highly intelligent, reclusive woman with a master’s degree in nuclear physics. She lived alone with two protective German Shepherds and was known for driving a white Chevrolet Camaro.

On Thursday December 30, 2010, at 10:46 am, Hamilton Police Service received a 911 call from a male at a rural address on Indian Trail in Ancaster.

Audrey’s body was found by a friend, Phil Kinsman, in the garage of her home on Indian Trail Road. She had been brutally stabbed multiple times in what police described as a “horrendous, vicious, and savage” attack. There were no signs of forced entry, and nothing appeared to have been stolen. Interestingly, her dogs were found locked inside the house and did not intervene in the attack in the garage. Due to the lack of forced entry and the specific routine of the victim, investigators believe she may have been targeted by someone who knew her. While police initially suggested a “sexual component” to the crime, later statements indicated there was no hard evidence of sexual assault.

In February 2011, police arrested David Laurie Scott, a homeless man who had been squatting in a nearby barn. He was charged with first-degree murder, but the charges were withdrawn by the Crown in June 2011 due to a lack of evidence.

Phil Kinsman, the friend who discovered the body was initially cleared but later felt under renewed police scrutiny.

As of 2025, the case remains unsolved and is considered an active investigation by the Hamilton Police Service.
