On the night of Friday, December 27, 1963, Margaret disappeared from her home at 21 Bridle Path in London. Her husband, Philip Sheeler, reported that they had an argument, after which she left the house for a walk at approximately 8:00pm. At the time of her disappearance, she was five to six months pregnant.
On January 23, 1964, nearly a month later, her body was discovered by two boys in a field west of Bridle Path on Kipps Lane. Her body was found nude, with her clothing strewn across the field, leading investigators to categorize the case as a sexual homicide. An autopsy determined she died from a skull fracture caused by blunt force trauma.
Margaret’s husband, Philip Sheeler, was a primary person of interest. Guests at a party the couple were supposed to host that evening noted Philip appeared drunk and was acting strangely, claiming Margaret had walked to her parents’ house which was a journey that would have taken over an hour by car.
Despite extensive investigations, no one was ever charged in connection with her death. The case is often discussed alongside other unsolved murders in the London area from that era, such as those of Jacqueline Dunleavy and Helga Beer.
