The Unsolved Murder of Julian “Julie” Wolanski

Julie was a 16-year old high school student was found murdered after having been missing for several days. She was last seen leaving her residence on August 7, 1962, telling her mother she was going to meet a teacher at the Eglinton subway station to discuss her Grade 9 requirements. Her body was discovered on Sunday, August 12, 1962, by the side of the road on Indian Line near Rexdale Boulevard, in what was then a largely rural area north of Toronto Airport by the Humber River and wore only silk stockings. The rest of her clothing and her straw clutch purse containing $10.00 were nowhere to be found and have never been recovered. An autopsy revealed she had been raped, severely beaten, and shot in the heart with a .32-calibre bullet. Law enforcement believes that the killer may have held her captive for several days and that she was murdered elsewhere before being haphazardly discarded at the location where she was found.

The murder remains unsolved, though investigators believe that her killer may have targeted other young women using similar tactics, posing as a teacher or doctor to lure them in. Other girls reported similar encounters with a mysterious man who knew details about their lives.

Decades later, the lead detective mentioned having a strong person of interest / suspect but not enough evidence to lay charges. The Toronto Police Service maintains a cold case section in their Homicide and Missing Persons Unit, hoping that advancements in forensic techniques or new information from the public may eventually provide a resolution.
