The Unsolved Murder of Jake Surerus

Jake’s body was found by a passing motorist on the front lawn of an apartment building shortly before 6:00am on May 23, 2013, near Grove and Davidson Streets in Barrie, Ontario. An autopsy determined he died of blunt penetrating facial trauma after striking a light standard. Police believe a vehicle was involved and that he may have been dragged by it. Police determined through his cell phone activity that he had contact with several people from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) between 2:00am and 6:00am the morning of his death.

The Barrie Police Service has faced a “wall of silence” in the case, suggesting witnesses are holding back vital information. The Barrie Police Service has also offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.

Jake had a challenging life, including sustaining two traumatic brain injuries at a younger age that resulted in cognitive impairment. His mother has spoken publicly about the difficulties he faced and the systemic failures in providing him with adequate care and support. Despite his struggles, he had recently moved into his own apartment in Barrie shortly before his death.
