The Unsolved Murder of Simone Sandler

Simone Sandler, a 21-year-old university drama student, was murdered in Toronto, Ontario, in 1994.

Simone Sandler was working a summer job as a recruiter for film extras downtown when she disappeared. She was described as a sweet, empathetic, and somewhat naive young woman who was not typically exposed to the downtown environment where she worked.

Simone was last seen on Saturday, July 23, 1994, in the Yonge Street and Gerrard Street area of Toronto. Her body was found on Saturday, July 30, 1994, around 3:00pm, a week after she was last seen, floating in the Keating Channel (where the Don River meets Lake Ontario). She was naked from the waist down and her blue denim shorts, new clogs, and beige knapsack were missing from the scene. The body’s decomposition and the polluted water made forensic analysis challenging. Her cause of death showed she had been strangled and drowned.

Investigators have explored the potential links to other similar murders of women in the Toronto area at that time, but a direct connection has not been proven, and no one has been charged in Simone’s case.
