Yuan “Tracy” Tian was a 31-year-old international student from China who was murdered in her Toronto apartment on September 2, 2008.

Tracy was an immigrant from China and a recent Master’s degree graduate in economics from the University of Guelph. She was found dead in her apartment at 75 Talara Drive, near Bayview Avenue and Sheppard Avenue East in North York, on September 2, 2008, around 6:30 pm. Tracy was found in her bedroom with her hands bound behind her back and she had suffered multiple stab wounds. There was no sign of forced entry into the apartment, leading police to believe she either knew or expected her assailant. Robbery and sexual assault were ruled out as motives.
Before her death, Tracy had placed an online ad on a Chinese website looking for a roommate. Police believe her killer may have contacted her through this ad. Police identified a phone call made to her at 4:10pm on the day of her murder from a payphone at a nearby public library, and another call from her building’s lobby intercom around 4:30pm. Police have interviewed over 50 people of interest, including those who viewed the room, but all have been cleared as suspects.
The Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad continues to investigate this case. A $50,000 reward has been authorized for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person responsible
