The Unsolved Murder of Jeanne Sivret

On Mother’s Day, May 11, 1986, at around 11:30am, Jeanne Sivret left her residence in Rough Waters, near Bathurst, for her daily walk with the family dog after having a dispute with her husband.

She never returned home. Her husband reported her missing the next morning before he left for work. Her body was found later that evening by her son-in-law approximately 2 km from her home, with the family dog barking nearby.

An investigation revealed that Jeanne was a victim of a brutal murder. She had been struck in the head with a heavy, blunt object more than 40 times, crushing her skull.

Her husband, Ernest Sivret, was the prime suspect and was known to be an abusive, alcoholic man who frequently beat her. He was charged and tried in connection with her death but was found not guilty due to insufficient evidence at the time.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit is still seeking information related to the case. The hope remains that new forensic techniques (like DNA analysis) or public information may help solve the murder.
