The Unsolved Murder of Constance Abigail Samuels & Desarae Samuels

Constance and her daughter Desarae were murdered in a deliberately set apartment fire in Toronto on November 1, 1995. They lived in a three-bedroom apartment on the 20th floor of a high-rise building at 10 Willowridge Road in Etobicoke, near Eglinton Avenue and Martin Grove Road.

Constance’s husband told police he was at a church prayer meeting that evening and returned around 10:30pm to find the apartment in flames. He went downstairs to alert a security guard, who then pulled the fire alarm, and the husband called emergency services several minutes later at approximately 10:45pm. Constance and Desarae were found inside the smoke-filled apartment and were rushed to the hospital, where they both died shortly after arrival from smoke inhalation.

The fire was deemed “strange” by investigators because neither Constance nor her husband smoked, and there were no other common fire hazards like candles, heating pads, or space heaters in the home. Tests later confirmed that an accelerant was used to deliberately start the fire in the master bedroom, which caused an estimated $7,000.00 in damage.

The double murder is an active cold case with the Toronto Police Service Homicide and Missing Persons Unit. No arrests have been made, and police are still seeking information from the public, hoping new investigative techniques might lead to a resolution.
