A Little Bit About Daniel’s Case:

Daniel McKenzie was a member of the Innu Nation of Matimekush-Lac John. The last time that Daniel was seen was July 31, 1981. Daniel and his wife were traveling with a few friends and relatives in a taxi between Schefferville, Quebec & the Labrador-Quebec border. They had attended the area of Lake Huston and were on their way home to Schefferville. They were approximately 25KM from Schefferville when a disagreement broke out, the cab driver pulled over and Daniel jumped out. They continued to argue after getting out of the taxi. Daniel headed off into the bush/forested area saying he would be back. He never returned.

At this point the group started to search for Daniel but eventually they had to return to Schefferville. A search was put together and a large group of people spent many weeks looking for Daniel, but he was never located.

Daniel was 23 years old when he went missing. His baby daughter Marjolaine was just 1 year old. She is now in her 40’s and is still searching for answers.

In an interview with Saltwire from 2021, Marjolaine said that she grew up not really understanding what had happened to her father. No one really talked about what had happened. The Canadian Rangers took Marjolaine out to look at the area where her father disappeared. Apparently they had found some cigarettes and remains of a fire, but no clothing or personal belongings. Nothing. And there was no confirmation that these things had anything to do with Daniel. They also mentioned that they suspect he did not want to be found.

The aftermath of Daniel’s disappearance took a heavy toll on the people who were in the taxi as well. The small community of Schefferville was filled with accusations and rumors and theories. Several of them moved away, including Marjolaine and her mother who ended up eventually remarrying.

Marjolaine has heard a broad range of theories over the years ranging from a connection to missing money to alien abduction. Sadly, Marjolaine isn’t any closer to finding out what happened to her father. It is like he vanished into thin air.
