A Daughter Remembers Her Mother
by Crystal Hardy (daughter of Ruby Hardy)

When the news about these women started to surface, many people approached me to find out if my mother was one of the first 50. I didn’t want to think about it at all. I didn’t want to picture my mother being hurt in the ways described in the media. I felt sick to my stomach hearing about what the things that happened to those women.
Once the names were revealed, there was a slight sense of relief when I didn’t find my mother’s name. Don’t get me wrong, I obviously felt for the women and their families, but that hope was back in my mind that my mother was still alive. Once the news of the additional five women being added to the list came out, I was told that my mother was on the list. My heart sank. My fears were realized.
Even though my mother has been out of my life for many years, a day doesn’t go by that I don’t think about her. I always hope that she is doing all right, despite her problems. I remember my mother as a strong woman that knew how to survive. Despite what people may think, my mother took great care of me and my sister and brother. She always made sure that we had food, shelter and clothing. She was a loving mother that would do anything for her children. She did the best she could with what she had to work with.
Despite her problems, I never questioned her love for us. I have come to realize that having an addiction is like having a disease. It takes a long time to get well again. I pray every night that my mother is safe and has started coping with her illness. I hope that having her name on the list will make her come forth and say that she is all right. However, if this doesn’t occur, perhaps my family and I will have some sort of closure.
