Marcia was born and raised on the Shamattawa First Nation in northern Manitoba. Marcia was well known and liked, so to this day, many wonder who could have killed her or why.
On July 27, 2005, Marcia Viola Koostachin was reported missing by her family. On July 30, 2005, her body was found on the outskirts of the fly-in reserve. No one had seen or heard from her for over 24 hours, which was rare considering Shamattawa is a fly-in community, about 745 km / 463 miles north of Winnipeg. Her boyfriend was out of town and there were no suspicions of domestic violence in that relationship.
Marcia’s mother Margaret Koostachin said that she was not informed by the RCMP of discovery of her daughter’s body. They never even came and knocked on her door. She was told by members of her community. Marcia’s mother had voiced her irritation and frustration with the fact that law enforcement has never told her anything. She has stated that she believes that the RCMP could have and should have done a lot more. They did very little in the way of interviewing people. They said it was raining so they could not promptly search the scene where Marcia’s body was located.
No cause of death has bee released, however her death is being investigated as a homicide by the Manitoba RCMP Major Crimes Unit as they continue to investigate.
