Chantel arrived to pick up her boyfriend, Shane Morrison, from a basketball games he was playing in at the Northwood Community Centre near Jane and Sheppard in Toronto, Ontario. As they were getting ready to leave the parking lot, two men appeared on both sides of the car and open fired into the vehicle. Shane was able to get out of the vehicle and run, however Chantel didn’t follow. She did get the car started and drove away, but she didn’t get too far. She crashed her car into a house and died at the scene.
On Monday, February 6, 2006, at about 11:08 pm, police responded to a 911 call at 15 Clubhouse Court. They found Chantel inside her vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported to hospital, where she died shortly after arrival. Shane had been shot in the shoulder, but lost consciousness in the backyard of a nearby home, but survived.
As the investigation started, law enforcement came to believe that Shane was the actual target and Chantel was an innocent bystander. Shane was allegedly the target of a ‘well known street gang’.
