Details About Russell’s Case: Russell was a voluntary patient of the (now defunct) North Bay Psychiatric Hospital, Highway 11 North, in North Bay, Ontario. It is not known why he was seeking treatment or if he was mentally ill.
Russell walked away from the hospital grounds, in poor winter like weather and was not properly dressed for the conditions. It was snowing that night and was -10 degrees with a -20 degree wind chill. Patrol and Emergency Response Team officers of the North Bay Police Service, with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police’s canine unit and helicopter and the Anishinabek Police’s four-wheelers, searched Bomarc Road off Highway 11 where it was believed he had gone, as well as the surrounding wooded area and nearby gravel pit. Area residents were also canvassed in attempts to gain more information from potential witnesses. Unfortunately, the three-day search led to negative results.
No sign of Russell was ever found.
Authorities have said that foul play is not suspected in his disappearance.
Additional Note: Russell Hoffert is the one of six people to go missing from the hospital between 1966 and 2010. Other patients include Philippe Guerin, Norman Welsh, Terry Zubko, Dawn Carisse, and Glen Wesley.
