Details About Katherine’s Case: Katherine was last seen walking home from a convenience store on Harvey Kirkland Road, where she was getting groceries for her mother. She was carrying groceries home, possibly in paper bags. Bags containing 2 loaves of bread, a can of milk, 1 box of instant potatoes, 3 packs of “Mark Ten” cigarettes and 1 package of “Schneiders Red Hot” weiners. She’d called her mother before 5:00pm that same day. Katherine’s sisters were going to meet up with her while she was walking home, but Katherine never showed up.
Barry Vincent Manion, Katherine’s distant cousin, was arrested for involvement in her disappearance on January 9, 2009. He resided in Kirkland Lake and was employed at a car dealership when Katherine went missing. Barry also had a history of sexually abusing Katherine. He told authorities that he offered Katherine a ride home, but drove her to a wooded area instead to rape her. Katherine refused to have sex with him and ran off, but Barry caught up and choked her to death so she would stop screaming. He left her body in the woods.
On March 11, 2009, Barry pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole for ten years. He committed suicide by hanging himself and was found dead in his cell two days later.
Katherine’s body has never been recovered. Extensive searches have failed to locate her.
